The Washington Nationals made the decision to demote All-Star shortstop CJ Abrams to the minor leagues on Saturday due to an internal issue, as stated by manager Dave Martinez. It is anticipated that Abrams will not participate in any more games for the major league team this season. Martinez refrained from disclosing specific details about the situation to maintain confidentiality, emphasizing that supporting Abrams is a priority for the team. Abrams, who is set to turn 24 in October, has achieved a batting average of .246 with 20 home runs, 65 RBIs, and 31 stolen bases.
The choice to send Abrams to Triple-A Rochester will result in a loss of $18,885 for the player, as his contract stipulates a salary of $752,400 while at the major league level and $362,100 in the minors. Brodie Van Wagenen, Abrams’ agent, declined to comment on the matter. Despite Rochester not making the International League postseason and concluding their season soon, Abrams will not be playing for them. Instead, he will head to Washington before heading to the team’s training complex in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Martinez shared that he had a lengthy and emotional conversation with Abrams, expressing his unwavering support for the player. Acquired from San Diego in a trade that involved Juan Soto, Abrams had a strong performance before the All-Star break but faced challenges afterward. Teammate MacKenzie Gore, who pitched well in Saturday’s game, found it difficult to discuss the situation involving Abrams, emphasizing their close bond.
Martinez views this as an opportunity for Abrams to learn and grow, hoping that he will understand his responsibilities as a member of the Nationals family. The team recalled infielder Trey Lipscomb from Rochester following Abrams’ demotion. Martinez remains confident that Abrams will return to contribute positively to the team in the future.
