AP-NORC Poll Shows Increased Favorability Towards Kamala Harris as Democratic Ticket’s Leader

Lillian Dunsmuir from Bullhead City, Arizona, recently began to develop a positive opinion of Vice President Kamala Harris, citing her intelligence, humor, and pro-choice stance. A new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research indicates that Harris is viewed slightly more favorably by voters compared to July, with around half of voters having a positive view of her. Conversely, former President Donald Trump’s favorability ratings remained stable in the poll conducted before a reported assassination attempt on him.

The survey also revealed that approximately half of voters believe Harris would make a good president, a sentiment less widely shared about Trump. Despite political polarization, some voters express hope that Harris could bring about positive change. Independent voters view Harris more favorably compared to Trump, giving her potential to gain ground in that demographic.

While opinions about Trump are generally more solidified, voters see Harris as someone who could change the country for the better and fight for people like them. Despite attempts to portray Harris as weak, voters perceive her and Trump as equally capable of handling the presidency. Democrat and Republican voters have stronger negative feelings about the opposing party’s candidate. Democratic voters show stronger positive sentiments towards Harris than Republican voters towards Trump.

Overall, Harris continues to receive positive feedback from supporters who appreciate her grasp of issues like childcare and housing challenges faced by first-time buyers. The poll, conducted between September 12-16, 2024, surveyed 1,771 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points.
