The State Department’s internal watchdog released a report on Wednesday, stating that officials mishandled the security clearance suspension of U.S. special envoy for Iran, Rob Malley, last year. The report highlighted deviations from standard protocols, allowing Malley access to classified meetings and information despite the suspension.
According to the inspector general’s report, the absence of clear policies for political appointees and inadequate supervision of Special Envoy Malley resulted in confusion regarding his authorized work post-suspension. Malley, a key figure in the Biden administration’s efforts concerning the Iran nuclear deal and detained Americans in Iran, was placed on unpaid leave in June 2023 over allegations of mishandling classified information.
Questions arose about Malley’s absence when he missed a classified congressional briefing on Iran in May 2023. State Department officials initially attributed his nonattendance to “extended personal leave” possibly related to a family health matter.
Congressional Republicans have been urging the State Department to provide more information on Malley’s suspension and the associated allegations for the past year. The watchdog report is anticipated to be shared with Congress soon, as GOP lawmakers emphasize the need for accountability within the State Department.
