Trump and Harris temporarily pausing campaign tours in key swing states

Presidential candidates typically concentrate their efforts on battleground states, but on Wednesday, Donald Trump is diverting to a somewhat unexpected location by visiting suburban New York. The Republican nominee is making his way to Uniondale on Long Island, a crucial area for his party in securing control of the House. The Republicans are aiming to defend 18 seats held by Republicans in Democratic-leaning congressional districts that were won by Joe Biden in 2020, particularly in coastal New York and California, while also making moves to challenge Democrats in other regions.

One of the highly watched races in Long Island features first-term Republican Rep. Anthony D’Esposito facing off against Democrat Laura Gillen. D’Esposito, a former New York Police detective, clinched victory in a district Biden carried by approximately 15 percentage points in 2020. Trump, ahead of his visit, expressed optimism on his Truth Social platform, claiming the GOP has a chance to win New York for the first time in many decades. He also promised to address the SALT deduction issue, hinting at eliminating the cap on state and local tax deductions that was implemented as part of the 2017 tax cut legislation he signed.

The cap on state and local tax deductions, known as SALT, has resulted in higher tax payments for numerous residents in states like New York, New Jersey, and California; this issue holds significant weight in the campaign, especially for Republican lawmakers in districts won by Biden. On the Democratic side, Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to deliver a speech at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 47th Annual Leadership Conference in Washington, with plans for trips to Michigan and Wisconsin later in the week.

Latino voters play a crucial role in swing states such as Arizona, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. Harris recently advocated for tax deductions for new small businesses, highlighted her work on border cases as California’s attorney general, and emphasized her support for a pathway to citizenship for deserving individuals during an appearance on the Nueva Network with “Chiquibaby.” In a separate event in Philadelphia, Harris condemned Trump’s rhetoric and urged voters to prevent him from having a platform again.

After an alarming incident resembling an assassination attempt while golfing in Florida on Sunday, Trump is resuming his campaign activities. He made a trip to Flint, Michigan on Tuesday with further plans to visit the nation’s capital and North Carolina later in the week. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, is set to host an event in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Wednesday.
