WNBA playoff seeding remains uncertain as regular season approaches finale

Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have secured the sixth seed in the upcoming WNBA playoffs. The specifics of their first-round matchup remain uncertain until at least Tuesday due to the close competition for postseason spots among other teams. Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury have already secured the seventh seed.

With only four days left in the WNBA regular season, all 12 teams will play on Thursday before the postseason kicks off on Sunday. The Fever are likely to face the Connecticut Sun, the current third seed, in their first playoff game. Clark, who had a standout season, made history by setting the WNBA single-season assist record and the league’s rookie scoring record. She surpassed Seimone Augustus’ 2006 scoring record of 744 points with a season-high 35 points on Sunday, bringing her total to 761 points.

The Sun are currently trailing the Minnesota Lynx by two games for the second seed, with both teams set to face off in Connecticut on Tuesday. Minnesota remains in the running for the top overall seed after their recent victory against New York. However, they are two games behind the Liberty, who they would need to lose their upcoming games for Minnesota to claim the top spot.

The competition for the final playoff spot is intense, with Chicago, Washington, and Atlanta all tied for eighth place. Chicago missed an opportunity to take the lead after losing to Phoenix, while Atlanta stayed in the race by defeating the Mystics in overtime. The upcoming game between Chicago and Atlanta on Tuesday will likely determine which team secures the final playoff spot.

Las Vegas currently holds the fourth seed, but they could move up to third with two wins and two losses by Connecticut. If this scenario doesn’t unfold, the Aces will face the Seattle Storm in the playoffs. The Aces have a one-game advantage over the Storm, with the two teams set to compete against each other on Tuesday in Seattle.
