An Indianapolis man, Dion Kimbrough, has been given a 60-year prison sentence by a Marion County judge for a road rage incident that led to the death of Eli Hickerson, a central Indiana resident, following a lengthy work shift. Kimbrough, 24, was found guilty in August of murder and illegal possession of a firearm by a violent felon regarding Hickerson’s shooting on July 18, 2022. Hickerson, aged 30 and from Carthage, was shot while riding as a passenger in a car, with Kimbrough driving a box truck on Interstate 70 on the far east side of Indianapolis.
Prosecutors asserted that Hickerson’s tragic death was a result of Kimbrough’s road rage while Hickerson was on his way home from work. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed his dismay over the incident in a statement. Kimbrough’s defense attorney, Israel Nunez Cruz, argued that his client had acted in self-defense and intends to appeal the conviction.
The driver of the car in which Hickerson was travelling informed investigators that he noticed a box truck driving recklessly on Interstate 465 before tailing them as they exited onto I-70. The driver recounted that the box truck pulled up alongside their car, and the driver of the truck fired several shots, leading to Hickerson’s untimely demise.
