49ers put Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve, out for at least 4 games

The San Francisco 49ers have made the decision to place star running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve due to ongoing calf and Achilles tendon issues. This move, announced on Saturday, will see McCaffrey sidelined for a minimum of four additional games, having already missed the season opener. He could potentially make a return to play on October 10th in a game against Seattle.

McCaffrey sustained these injuries early in training camp, causing him to miss four weeks of practice. Although he made a limited return to the field last week, he ultimately had to sit out the season opener against the Jets. After experiencing discomfort following practice on Thursday, it was deemed necessary for him to be placed on injured reserve.

Last season, McCaffrey led the NFL in total yards from scrimmage with 2,023 and was tied for the league lead in touchdowns with 21, earning him the title of AP Offensive Player of the Year. In the absence of McCaffrey, backup Jordan Mason stepped up, delivering an impressive performance with 28 carries for 147 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers’ victory over the Jets.

Having faced multiple injury setbacks in his final seasons with the Carolina Panthers, McCaffrey had been healthy over the past two seasons. With Mason expected to take on a larger role in McCaffrey’s absence, the team will also have rookies Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor Jr. available to contribute. Additionally, safety Tracy Walker III has been elevated from the practice squad for the Niners’ upcoming game against Minnesota.

As the 49ers navigate through McCaffrey’s absence, Mason’s strong performance and the support from other players on the roster will be crucial in maintaining their competitive edge.
