Death of police recruit in Massachusetts during training exercise due to medical emergency

A Massachusetts State Police recruit tragically passed away a day after experiencing a medical emergency during a defensive tactics training exercise, authorities confirmed. The recruit, 25-year-old Enrique Delgado-Garcia, had become unresponsive during the exercise at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree, according to department spokesperson Tim McGuirk. The training incident occurred approximately 80 miles northeast of Boston.

Following Delgado-Garcia’s unresponsiveness, the academy’s medical team promptly intervened. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, he was swiftly transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his condition on Friday. Delgado-Garcia’s mother, Sandra Garcia, disclosed to news outlets that her son had sustained injuries during the exercise. She expressed bewilderment over the severity of the training session that led to his tragic outcome, mentioning brain damage, broken teeth, and a neck fracture.

McGuirk did not disclose the specific nature of the exercise Delgado-Garcia was participating in. The recruit, a Worcester resident, had joined the training program in April and was anticipated to graduate on October 9th. McGuirk shared that the Massachusetts State Police administered the oath of office to Delgado-Garcia shortly before his passing. The recruit was surrounded by family, friends, and classmates during a bilingual ceremony where he was presented with his Trooper Badge.

The circumstances surrounding Delgado-Garcia’s death are currently under investigation and have been actively reviewed by law enforcement authorities. Lindsay Corcoran, a spokesperson for the Worcester County District Attorney’s office, confirmed the ongoing scrutiny of the incident. While Col. John Mawn Jr. of the state police emphasized the department’s commitment to supporting Delgado-Garcia’s family and fellow recruits during this challenging period.

Governor Maura Healey expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Delgado-Garcia, acknowledging his dedication to service and the impact he had on those around him. The State Police Association of Massachusetts redirected inquiries regarding the incident to the state police department. In the wake of the tragic event, our hearts go out to Delgado-Garcia’s family, friends, and the law enforcement community as they grapple with his untimely passing.
