Ballet dancer Michaela Mabinty DePrince, renowned for her journey from a war-torn orphanage in Sierra Leone to prestigious stages worldwide, has passed away at the age of 29, as confirmed by her family. Described as an inspiration to many, DePrince’s impact transcended borders and resonated with audiences globally.
Having been adopted by an American couple, DePrince’s talent shone early in her career, appearing in a documentary and showcasing her skills on “Dancing With the Stars” at just 17 years old. She furthered her dance education at the American Ballet Theatre’s Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School before becoming a principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and later moving on to the Dutch National Ballet in the Netherlands. In 2021, she joined the Boston Ballet, where she continued to captivate audiences with her artistry.
In her memoir, “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina,” DePrince detailed her challenging upbringing in the orphanage, where she endured mistreatment due to a skin pigmentation disorder. Despite the hardships, she found solace and aspiration in a magazine image of an American ballerina, igniting her desire to pursue a career in dance.

Survived by five sisters and two brothers, DePrince’s family has requested that donations in her memory be directed to War Child, an organization she passionately supported as a War Child Ambassador.
