Funeral services for a teenager and a math teacher who tragically lost their lives in a Georgia high school shooting were set to take place on Saturday. Four individuals, including the 14-year-old student Mason Schermerhorn and teacher Christina Irimie, were killed in the attack at Apalachee High School, where another teacher and eight students were also injured.
Mason Schermerhorn was described by a neighbor as a cheerful boy who had a constant smile on his face as he grew up over the years. Christina Irimie, who moved to the U.S. from Romania over two decades ago, was not only dedicated to teaching algebra but also shared her passion for dance with children in the Atlanta Romanian community.
Mourners were expected to gather for separate services honoring Schermerhorn and Irimie, where readings and remembrances would be shared in both English and Romanian. The funerals served as an opportunity for the school community to come together to grieve, with other schools in Barrow County having reopened the previous week.
The tragic incident also claimed the lives of 39-year-old teacher Richard Aspinwall and 14-year-old student Christian Angulo, whose funeral was scheduled for Friday. A 14-year-old student named Colt Gray has been charged with murder in connection with the school shooting, and his father faces charges for providing the weapon used in the attack.
Authorities revealed that Colt Gray surrendered to school officers shortly after the shooting began, with the investigation showing that he had concealed a semiautomatic rifle in his backpack on the school bus. The community continues to mourn the loss of these lives and grapple with the aftermath of the devastating events that unfolded at Apalachee High School.
