Dolphins to bring in new quarterback as Tagovailoa recovers from concussion

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins are making adjustments to their quarterback lineup as Tua Tagovailoa recovers from a recent concussion, head coach Mike McDaniel announced on Friday. In Tagovailoa’s absence, Skylar Thompson will be taking on the starting quarterback role for the Dolphins. Tagovailoa sustained his third known concussion during Thursday night’s game against Buffalo, forcing him to exit in the third quarter. All three concussions have occurred within the span of the last 24 months.

McDaniel expressed the team’s confidence in Thompson, indicating that he will step up as the team’s starter while Tagovailoa undergoes evaluation. The decision on whether Tagovailoa will be placed on injured reserve has not yet been made, with Tagovailoa expected to begin the evaluation process at the team facility on Friday.

While McDaniel acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Tagovailoa’s timeline for return, he mentioned that the quarterback is unlikely to play in the upcoming game against Seattle on September 22. Emphasizing the importance of medical advice in such situations, McDaniel stated that decisions regarding Tagovailoa’s return will be based on evaluations by medical professionals.

In the game against Buffalo, Tagovailoa had completed 17 of 25 passes for 145 yards, with one touchdown and three interceptions. One interception was returned for a Buffalo touchdown. Thompson, in relief, completed eight of 14 passes for 80 yards. Following the game, Thompson expressed readiness and confidence in leading the Dolphins’ offense, stating his commitment to preparation and hard work.

As the Dolphins navigate Tagovailoa’s concussion recovery, the team remains focused on supporting their quarterbacks and ensuring the best decisions are made in consultation with medical experts.
