Body of diver retrieved from shipwreck in Lake Michigan

Authorities have found the body of a diver who went missing during an expedition at a Lake Michigan shipwreck. The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department announced that they recovered the body of Patrick Kelly, a 72-year-old individual from Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, near the S.S. Wisconsin on Wednesday morning. Kelly was exploring the wreck, which sits more than 120 feet underwater around six miles off the shore of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, on Tuesday when he did not resurface at the expected time. His wife, present on their boat, made a distress call.
Several agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, joined the search but had to pause due to unfavorable conditions in the lake. They resumed their search efforts Wednesday morning and managed to locate the body with the help of sonar and remote robotic vehicles. The S.S. Wisconsin sank in 1929 during a powerful storm, resulting in the deaths of nine crew members. The ship’s captain was rescued from the water but sadly passed away on land, as indicated on the Wisconsin Shipwrecks website.
