Fatal Incident on Colorado River Trip at Grand Canyon National Park Marks Seventh Fatality Since July 31

There has been a recent fatality at Grand Canyon National Park, with authorities confirming the death of 59-year-old Patrick Horton from Salida, Colorado. Horton was participating in a non-commercial river trip along the Colorado River and was found deceased by members of his group on the 10th day of the trip. The National Park Service is collaborating with the Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office to investigate Horton’s passing.

This tragic incident marks the seventh death at the Grand Canyon since July 31st and the fifteenth fatality so far this year. In 2023, there were 11 reported deaths at the park. Authorities mention that typically, there are around 10 to 15 fatalities per year in the Grand Canyon. The National Park Service continues to monitor and address safety concerns within the park to ensure visitors’ well-being.
