Rio de Janeiro’s beaches are typically bustling with activity on sunny weekends, but on one particular stretch of sand, a different kind of spectacle unfolds. Spectators hold up their phones to capture the remarkable athletic feats of a 3-year-old border collie named Floki in a game known as footvolley, which combines elements of soccer and beach volleyball.
Floki has captured the imagination of many due to his ability to excel in a sport that challenges even human athletes. The rules of footvolley closely resemble beach volleyball, with a lower net and players prohibited from using their hands and arms. Instead of traditional methods, Floki skillfully maneuvers the ball with his mouth, showcasing agility and precision that have earned him a substantial following on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Although his owner, Gustavo Rodrigues, is a footvolley coach, he insists that Floki’s involvement in the sport was not planned. Initially desiring an American Bully, Rodrigues was surprised when Floki demonstrated potential at just 2 months old by playfully chasing after balloons.
Floki’s journey began with practicing “altinha,” where participants juggle a soccer ball in a circle. His progression led to competing in the intricate and demanding game of footvolley, a favorite pastime among retired Brazilian soccer stars like Ronaldinho and Romário, requiring agility, coordination, timing, and finesse.
Rodrigues praises Floki’s exceptional skills on the court, emphasizing his ability to anticipate ball movements and maintain optimal positioning during matches. The enthusiastic canine’s love for the game is palpable, even while resting under the shade, as he attentively follows nearby matches and eagerly engages in gameplay, barking commands and celebrating victories alongside Rodrigues.
As Floki’s popularity continues to soar, he has attracted sponsorship deals and strategic partnerships, prompting frequent trips to Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian states for demonstrations, marketing events, and social media collaborations.
His busy schedule often includes playing alongside renowned footvolley champions and participating in promotional shoots for various brands. Despite the glamour of their social media presence, Rodrigues and Floki return to Brasilia to focus on competitive matches, where they win approximately one out of every three games, with opponents eager to avoid defeat by a four-legged contender.
