Matías Delacroix, a renowned Chilean photojournalist working with The Associated Press in Panama City since 2019, has extensively covered significant events throughout Latin America. He has documented occurrences such as the COVID-19 pandemic, aftermath of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse’s assassination, Pelé’s funeral, Javier Milei’s election in Argentina, Nicolas Maduro’s election in Venezuela, and the 2023 Pan American Games, among others.

Delacroix shared insights into a captivating photo he captured at a Comic-Con event featuring a Deadpool fan. He explained that his goal is to capture ordinary moments, and with the popularity of the movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” he anticipated encountering fans in costume. After observing a Deadpool fan for over 15 minutes, Delacroix waited for a spontaneous moment that would yield a compelling image for the AP’s report.

The photojournalist detailed his process, mentioning that he discreetly followed the Deadpool fan until the moment unfolded naturally. The fan removed his mask, took a drink outside a restroom, and then put his mask back on before stashing his belongings in a shopping bag. Delacroix captured this genuine moment using his Sony A1 camera equipped with a 35mm f/1.4 lens.

Regarding why the photo resonates with viewers, Delacroix explained that it captures the essence of a Deadpool fan in a light-hearted and unexpected scenario, mirroring the character’s quirky and morally ambiguous nature. The image deviates from the fan’s initial purpose of participating in a costume contest, adding whimsy and humor to the overall scene.
