The NeoQuimica Arena in Sao Paulo, Brazil, welcomed the NFL’s first game in the country, where the Green Bay Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles donned their green-dominated colors. Despite the hesitation from the host soccer club, Corinthians, many fans were excited about the event. Corinthians, usually avoiding any connection to the green of local rival Palmeiras, showed support for the NFL game.

In Sao Paulo, anticipation was high for the second game of the 2024 NFL season, marking the league’s inaugural venture into South America. Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers, teams that made the playoffs last season, were met with enthusiasm by the Brazilian fans.

Cody Armstrong, a 32-year-old Packers fan from Oakland, California, traveled with friends to support his team, despite the local aversion to green. The group, including Eagles fans, embraced their green attire, showcasing their dedication to their respective teams.

Locals also joined in on the excitement, with many Brazilian fans displaying interest in American football. The significant fanbase for the sport in Brazil was evident, with an estimated 38 million fans in the soccer-loving nation. Approximately 42,000 fans were expected to fill the Corinthians stadium for the event.

Supporters like Bruno Silva and William Camargo, both Corinthians fans, showcased their bias towards the visiting teams. Silva sported an Eagles jersey, emphasizing his support for the designated “home” team in Brazil. Camargo, donning a Packers jersey, highlighted the similarities between the community-owned franchises of the Packers and Corinthians.

Aside from the Eagles and Packers jerseys, fans at the stadium sported a variety of NFL teams’ attire, including the New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens. The presence of former NFL player Russell Okung, engaging in capoeira displays with local practitioners, added to the festive atmosphere outside the stadium.

Okung expressed his delight at the NFL’s arrival in Brazil, showcasing his appreciation for the country and the sport. The event marked a significant milestone for American football enthusiasts in the region, fostering a new wave of support for the NFL amongst Brazilian fans.
