Injured Jannik Sinner advances to US Open men’s final by defeating Jack Draper with medical assistance

Top-ranked Jannik Sinner won a 7-5, 7-6 (3), 6-2 match against Jack Draper in the U.S. Open, securing his first final in this tournament and his second at a Grand Slam event this year. Both players required treatment from trainers at the same time during the game due to the humid weather. Sinner, a 23-year-old Italian who was recently cleared of a doping case, had his left wrist massaged while Draper, a 22-year-old from Britain, received medical attention after vomiting on the court.
As the players were being tended to, the court was cleaned with a vacuum behind the baseline where Draper had been sick. This unusual scene took place at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with temperatures in the high 70s and humidity above 60%. Sinner, who previously won the Australian Open in January, will face either Taylor Fritz or Frances Tiafoe in the final on Sunday.
Fritz and Tiafoe, close friends, were set to compete in the other men’s semifinal on Friday night in the first New York matchup between two American players in nearly two decades. The winner would be the first U.S. man in a Grand Slam final since 2009. The women’s final on Saturday will feature American Jessica Pegula against Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus.
