In a significant real estate move, Microsoft has purchased an office and research hub at 1045 La Avenida Street in Mountain View for $330 million. The all-cash transaction, finalized on September 4, was documented by the Santa Clara County Recorder’s Office. The property was sold by Mission West Properties, a well-established real estate and development firm, through an affiliate.
The acquisition includes a 33.3-acre campus located near the interchange of U.S. Highway 101 and State Route 85, close to North Shoreline Boulevard and La Avenida Street. This site has served as Microsoft’s primary Bay Area campus and employment hub, capable of accommodating 2,000 to 3,000 workers.
Microsoft had been leasing the property from Mission West Properties for several years before purchasing it. In 2017, the tech giant announced plans to redevelop the campus into an upgraded 643,000-square-foot complex and began moving into the new space in late 2019.
This transaction is notable as the second-largest real estate deal in Santa Clara County this year, following Nvidia’s $374.3 million purchase of several buildings in Santa Clara in May. It is also one of the largest property acquisitions in the Bay Area in 2024.
Since 2017, Microsoft has actively expanded its real estate footprint in the Bay Area, acquiring multiple properties in Mountain View near its main campus and purchasing vacant land in North San Jose, including the Alviso district.
