Police report that a 10-year-old boy fatally shot the 82-year-old ex-mayor of a Louisiana town

In Minden, Louisiana, tragedy struck as police reported a 10-year-old boy allegedly shot and killed 82-year-old Joe Cornelius Sr., who had served as the onetime mayor of the town. The boy also claimed to have shot and killed Cornelius’ daughter, Keisha Miles, 31. Both victims were discovered on a Sunday morning with multiple gunshot wounds, according to Minden Police Chief Jared McIver.

Authorities have not disclosed the exact relationship between the boy, now in custody, and the victims. Residents in the neighborhood shared with KSLA-TV that they overheard an argument between Cornelius and the boy before hearing several gunshots ring out.

Joe Cornelius Sr. was a well-respected figure in Minden, having been a city council member for years and briefly serving as mayor in 2013 following the passing of the previous mayor. Beyond his political roles, Cornelius had a background as a former sheriff’s deputy and marshal. He was highly regarded in Minden’s Black community, where he had worked at a funeral home, organized youth programs, and played a key role in initiating local Black history events.

Mayor Nick Cox of Minden expressed deep gratitude for Joe Cornelius’ service to the community, highlighting his unwavering dedication and contributions to the town’s advancement. The shocking incident has left the community grieving the loss of a beloved figure and former leader.
