Alfonso Cuarón, the acclaimed filmmaker, has ventured into the realm of television series with his latest project, “Disclaimer,” a seven-part show for AppleTV+. The series premiered four episodes at the Venice Film Festival. Based on a novel by Renée Knight, “Disclaimer” follows a documentarian and journalist, Catherine Ravenscroft, portrayed by Cate Blanchett, as she unravels a dark secret about herself revealed in a novel.
Cuarón, along with Blanchett and Kevin Kline, presented the series at the Venice Film Festival before its streaming debut on October 11th. Initially envisioning “Disclaimer” as a film, Cuarón adapted it into a longer format, drawing inspiration from renowned filmmakers like Fassbinder and Lynch.
Blanchett, Kline, and other cast members embraced the challenges of approaching the series as a film, a process that extended the production timeframe significantly. Involving two cinematographers, the series boasts a distinctive visual style to convey different perspectives within the story.
The creative process was intense and demanding, with the actors fully immersed in their roles. Despite the challenges, the team managed to bring “Disclaimer” to life in a unique and compelling manner. The remaining three episodes will be screened at the festival, alongside other notable series such as Joe Wright’s Mussolini biopic and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The New Years.” The Venice Film Festival, renowned for feature film premieres, also showcases select series, highlighting the varied talent and storytelling in the industry.
