Miles Krajewski and Jayci Simon, the first U.S. badminton Paralympians, demonstrated remarkable chemistry during their debut at the Paralympics in Paris. The 19-year-old mixed doubles pair defeated India 23-21, 21-11, marking the beginning of their quest for Paralympic gold. To secure their country’s first medal in badminton, Krajewski and Simon must finish in the top two of their group to move on to the semifinals in the SH6 category for players of short stature.

During the intense matches, the duo communicated non-verbally on the court, with only brief words of encouragement between points. The pair emphasized the importance of working together seamlessly, with Simon explaining, “Our coach instilled in us that we’re one when we’re out there.” Krajewski and Simon, aiming for a historic medal, expressed confidence in their abilities and their teamwork.

In addition to the mixed doubles event, Krajewski and Simon will also compete in men’s and women’s singles competitions. Their upcoming match against Thailand will determine if they advance to the final four pairs, bringing them closer to the possibility of a medal. The duo expressed how winning a medal would promote para badminton in the U.S., creating more opportunities, funding, and visibility for the sport in the country.

Their journey to the Paralympics involved rigorous training and dedication. Simon, who trained without a coach using a portable net at a local church’s gym, highlighted the challenges she overcame to reach this stage. Both Krajewski and Simon acknowledged the growth of badminton in the U.S. in recent years, with more Americans participating in international tournaments and the establishment of para badminton academies nationwide.

The duo’s chemistry and connection have evolved over two years of intermittent play and intensified training together at the Frisco Badminton Academy in Texas. Their bond began in 2016 when they met at a sports camp, and Krajewski’s father saw Simon’s potential in badminton, leading them to team up. Simon’s dedication to training and balancing studies in exercise science and kinesiology alongside part-time work reflects her resilience and commitment to the sport.

As they continue their Paralympic journey, Krajewski and Simon are determined to showcase their skills, teamwork, and passion for badminton, with the goal of not only securing a medal but also expanding the reach and popularity of para badminton in the United States.
