The EU’s chief diplomat increases calls for supporters of Ukraine to allow attacks on Russian targets

The European Union’s top diplomat called for Ukraine’s international allies to remove limitations on the use of weapons they provide to Ukraine, allowing the country’s armed forces to target locations within Russia. The United States and some EU members currently have restrictions on the use of the weapons they supply to Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities are eager to target Russian military sites, including airfields, that are used to launch attacks on Ukrainian forces and civilians.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell emphasized the importance of lifting restrictions on weaponry against Russian military targets, in line with international law. Borrell stressed the necessity of enabling Ukrainians to strike the locations where Russia is conducting bombings, stating that the weapons provided must be fully utilized for Ukraine’s defense.

During a meeting in Brussels to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Borrell, joined by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, strongly condemned Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Kuleba highlighted that the outcome of the conflict depends on the willingness of Ukraine’s allies to take decisive actions, indicating that delays in military support have resulted in damages and loss of lives.

Kuleba reiterated Ukraine’s intent to only target legitimate military objectives inside Russia and expressed the urgent need for military aid, particularly the quick deployment of Patriot air defense systems. He urged countries that committed to supplying Patriot systems to follow through promptly, emphasizing that these systems are crucial for defending Ukrainian airspace from Russian missile threats.

Ukraine previously stated its requirement for 25 Patriot air defense systems to enhance its defense capabilities against potential Russian missile attacks. Kuleba underlined the significance of delivering promised military support without delay to bolster Ukraine’s defense and minimize the impact of Russian aggression.
