AP Source: Dolphins Cut Mike White, Making Skylar Thompson Second-string Quarterback

The Miami Dolphins are parting ways with quarterback Mike White, according to a source informed of the decision. This move is set to make Skylar Thompson the probable backup for Tua Tagovailoa in the 2024 football season. Throughout the 2023 season, White served as Tagovailoa’s backup after inking a two-year deal with the Dolphins the previous offseason. White’s performance in 2023 included participation in six games, during which he managed 74 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

White and Thompson vied for the No. 2 quarterback position, splitting reps during the preseason. White completed 20 of 43 passes for 179 yards but failed to score any touchdowns. On the other hand, Thompson completed 35 of 61 passes for 346 yards, threw three touchdowns, and had one interception. Thompson appeared to secure the backup role by showcasing a strong performance in Miami’s preseason finale against Tampa Bay, where he led two touchdown drives and threw for 190 yards.

Drafted by Miami in the seventh round in 2022, Thompson gained valuable experience during his rookie season due to injuries to Tagovailoa and former backup Teddy Bridgewater. He participated in seven regular-season games and started three, including a playoff game against Buffalo. Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel praised Thompson’s growth and leadership skills, emphasizing the quarterback’s progress in orchestrating play calls and decision-making during preseason games.

White, originally selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth round of the 2018 draft, spent two seasons with the New York Jets before moving to the Dolphins. The team has not made an official announcement regarding White’s release.
