While driving through a neighborhood in Kansas City, Kansas, Perez spotted kids playing Wiffle ball in a backyard. Without hesitation, he pulled over, asked the kids if he could join, and joined in on the game.
In a video posted on social media by one of the kids’ mothers, Perez, sporting a casual long-sleeve t-shirt and shorts instead of his usual Royals uniform, is seen energetically swinging the bat and running the bases with the children. Perez shared his impromptu Wiffle ball game experience before a game against the Phillies, mentioning how the kids got excited when they realized they were playing with him.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro praised Perez for creating lasting memories for the kids and bringing his infectious energy to them. Perez, a nine-time All-Star who has spent his entire career in Kansas City, is well-known for his interactions with fans and his community involvement.
Despite growing up in Venezuela where there were no Wiffle balls, Perez enjoyed playing pickup games in the neighborhood. The kids he played with were using a type of Wiffle ball called a Blitzball, which presented more challenges than he expected, even striking him out once.
Perez, having a standout season with a .274 batting average, 22 home runs, and 85 RBIs, has been instrumental in the Royals’ success this year as they vie for a playoff spot. His dedication to the game and his fans, coupled with his friendly and approachable demeanor, have endeared him to many, both on and off the field.
