One prominent speaker was Gabrielle Giffords, a former congresswoman who survived a shooting in 2011. Giffords spoke of her challenging recovery, including relearning how to walk and talk. She commended Vice President Kamala Harris for her efforts against gun violence and endorsed her, highlighting Harris’ work on firearm legislation.
Harris, appointed by President Joe Biden to lead the federal office of gun violence prevention, has supported stricter gun laws, such as universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. In contrast, Republican nominee Donald Trump has opposed gun-control measures and downplayed restrictions like the ban on bump stocks.
Other advocates such as Georgia Rep. Lucy McBath, whose son was a victim of gun violence, and Abbey Clements, who witnessed the Sandy Hook school shooting, also shared stories of loss. McBath emphasized that their tragedies have only strengthened their determination to fight against gun violence.
Kimberly Rubio, whose daughter was killed in a school shooting, emotionally described her daughter’s vibrant personality. The convention also featured speakers like Melody McFadden and Edgar Vilchez, who have been personally impacted by gun violence.
The speakers’ testimonies moved the audience, with attendees seen wiping away tears as the words “Freedom From Gun Violence” appeared behind them. Their stories highlighted the harsh realities of gun violence and the urgent need for action to prevent further tragedies.
