Biden holds talks with Netanyahu to urge Israel and Hamas to reach ceasefire agreement

President Joe Biden engaged in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday in an effort to mediate a potential cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas amid the conflict in Gaza. Significant discrepancies, particularly concerning the presence of Israeli troops in key areas in Gaza, have complicated the negotiation process, casting doubt on the immediate likelihood of reaching a deal. Vice President Kamala Harris also participated in the call, emphasizing the urgency of concluding a ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages.

Biden and Netanyahu explored the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, as well as various militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis, which receive support from Tehran. The conversation took place while Biden was vacationing with his family in Santa Ynez, California, at a property owned by medical technology entrepreneur and Democratic donor Joe Kiani. The White House revealed that discussions included the latest developments with Iran and other militant groups supported by the country.

Efforts to broker a deal were further supported by Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s recent meetings with officials from Israel, Egypt, and Qatar. Despite these diplomatic endeavors, Hamas has expressed hesitance toward the proposed bridging agreement, citing concerns about Israel’s withdrawal from strategic corridors in Gaza and uncertainties about the deal’s implementation. Egyptian officials indicated that Hamas remains cautious about the proposal due to doubts regarding the complete removal of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Netanyahu’s recent meetings with right-wing groups in Gaza, who oppose a potential cease-fire, highlighted his assurance that Israel would not relinquish control over the strategic corridors in Gaza. However, details regarding the schedule and locations of potential Israeli military withdrawals from Gaza have not been disclosed by official sources. While the prospects for an immediate agreement appear uncertain, the United States continues to advocate for a resolution to the conflict in Gaza that ensures both peace and security for all parties involved.
