Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently in Poland for high-level discussions on security and trade before heading to Ukraine. Poland, a NATO and European Union member, is providing political, humanitarian, and defense support to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Modi is meeting with Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to focus on security issues, particularly in the region bordering Ukraine.

Despite criticism from Ukraine for his recent visit to Moscow and meeting with President Vladimir Putin, Modi has refrained from condemning Russia directly, instead emphasizing the importance of a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. The visit to Poland marks 70 years of official bilateral relations between India and Warsaw, with intentions to strengthen political, business, and cooperative ties in various sectors, including IT, cybersecurity, and defense.

India’s Foreign Minister, W?adys?aw Teofil Bartoszewski, expressed hope for a strategic partnership agreement with India to enhance relations further. The total value of bilateral trade between India and Poland has increased significantly in recent years, with India’s exports playing a significant role in this growth. Modi is also set to lay wreaths at monuments in Warsaw that commemorate joint efforts during World War II, including the protection of Polish children in India and the Battle of Monte Cassino.

Following his visit to Poland, Modi will travel to Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The trip to Ukraine comes amid criticism from Zelenskyy for Modi’s previous visit to Moscow and meeting with Putin. Despite this, India has refrained from condemning Russia’s invasion and continues to urge for a peaceful resolution through diplomatic means. Modi’s visit to both Poland and Ukraine underscores India’s efforts to navigate complex international relationships and foster partnerships for regional stability.
