Ohtani’s 39th homer and Kershaw’s pitching lead Dodgers to 2-1 victory against struggling Cardinals

On Sunday, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1, with Shohei Ohtani hitting his 39th home run of the season in the National League. Clayton Kershaw pitched six shutout innings to secure the win, while Miguel Rojas and Gavin Lux also contributed with three hits each, helping the NL West leaders secure their seventh victory in the last 10 games.

The Cardinals struggled, losing six of their last seven games, with Lars Nootbaar hitting a pinch-hit homer in the eighth inning as their sole run in the game. Ohtani’s home run and Rojas’ run-scoring single in the fifth inning were enough to give the Dodgers the edge.

Kershaw, who is a three-time Cy Young Award winner, had a strong performance allowing only four hits and striking out two batters in his fifth start since returning from shoulder surgery. Michael Kopech secured his 11th save for the Dodgers by finishing the game with a scoreless ninth inning.

On the Cardinals’ side, Sonny Gray (11-8) gave up two runs and seven hits over five innings before being replaced. In terms of injuries, Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman sat out due to a finger injury, while Cardinals’ Lance Lynn is expected to return soon after being on the injured list with right knee soreness.

Looking ahead, the Dodgers will face the Seattle Mariners with RHP Gavin Stone on the mound, while the Cardinals will have RHP Erick Fedde pitching against the Milwaukee Brewers. Fedde, who was acquired in a trade from the Chicago White Sox, will be looking to improve his 8-6 record and 3.40 ERA in the upcoming game.
