The Democratic National Convention begins on Monday in Chicago, following a turbulent period in which the party replaced its nominee. President Joe Biden exited the race, leading to Vice President Kamala Harris swiftly becoming the party’s new nominee, reshaping the election landscape just months before the votes. This shift necessitated updates to the party’s platform and physical adjustments to signage and materials at the convention venue to reflect the new Democratic ticket.
The convention, running until Thursday, will feature televised speeches and activities each evening. Notable speakers expected during the week include Harris, running mate Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Biden, former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, as well as 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton.
Viewers can watch the DNC through live streaming on various platforms, including the convention website, YouTube, and X. For the first time, vertical streams on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube will be available for easier mobile access. The convention will offer English and Spanish versions, American Sign Language interpretation, and an audio description service.
The event is held at the United Center, with additional activities taking place at the McCormick Place Convention Center. While Illinois traditionally supports Democratic presidential candidates, uncertainty looms due to potential protests against the Biden administration’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Harris is set to accept her nomination on Thursday, following Walz on Wednesday and Biden on Monday. Given the unconventional campaign timeline, the candidates aim to introduce themselves to a national audience. The DNC has outlined daily themes for the event, and more details are expected to be released each morning for that evening’s programming.
Following the DNC, Harris and Trump will debate on Sept. 10, with Walz and Vance scheduled for a debate on Oct. 1. Additional presidential and vice-presidential debates may be arranged in the future.
