The complaint primarily focuses on Mathew Bowyer, a Southern California bookmaker who recently pleaded guilty to running an illegal gambling operation in federal court.
Resorts World Las Vegas faces fines and potential disciplinary action from the Nevada Gaming Commission as a result of the allegations. The commission holds the authority to decide on penalties ranging from fines to revocation of the company’s gaming license. The board’s complaint also highlighted instances where the casino failed to conduct proper verification of funding sources for individuals like Bowyer.
Despite the allegations, Resorts World Las Vegas stated its commitment to resolving the issues and maintaining business integrity and compliance with laws and industry standards. The complaint documented several instances where the casino allegedly provided gifts, discounts, and flights on its private jet to Bowyer while he accumulated substantial losses amounting to over $6.6 million.
Bowyer was banned from the casino in October 2023 following a federal warrant search at his residence. The complaint lists 12 counts against Resorts World, with six specifically related to Bowyer, including allegations of failing to distance from illegal bookmakers and failure to report suspicious activities. The board’s investigation uncovered instances where employees failed to report concerning behavior and violations of anti-money laundering protocols.
The Nevada Gaming Control Board expressed concerns that the culture at Resorts World Las Vegas may facilitate money laundering and criminal activity, potentially damaging the reputation of Nevada’s gaming industry. The commission is yet to announce a decision on the matter following the complaint.
