Matsuyama’s caddie from Japan goes back home amid passport theft post Olympics

Hideki Matsuyama, a prominent golfer, will be competing in the PGA Tour’s postseason without his caddie and coach as they were victims of a robbery during a layover in London after the Tokyo Olympics. According to Golf Digest Japan, Matsuyama’s wallet was stolen but not his bronze medal from the Olympics or his passport. Unfortunately, his caddie, Shota Hayato, and coach Mikihito Kuromiya were not as lucky; their passports and visas were taken, resulting in their return to Japan to expedite new documents to re-enter the United States.

Despite the setback, Matsuyama, who previously triumphed at Riviera in the Genesis Invitational this year, currently holds the 8th position in the FedEx Cup, securing his participation in two playoff events leading up to the Tour Championship in Atlanta. The FedEx St. Jude Championship commences Thursday, followed by the BMW Championship in Denver before the Tour Championship.

Matsuyama acknowledged the uncertainty of his team being able to make it to Atlanta, stating that the chances are slim. In the absence of his original caddie, Taiga Tabuchi, who previously caddied for Ryo Hisatsune, will step in to work for Matsuyama at TPC Southwind this week.
