Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is set to release a book next winter titled “Antisemitism in America,” which will delve into his personal life and religious beliefs, serving as a cautionary message against antisemitism. Published by Grand Central Publishing, a division of Hachette Book Group, the book is scheduled for release on Feb. 18. Schumer, a 73-year-old Democrat from New York, will reflect on his upbringing in Brooklyn during the 1960s, his time at Harvard in the ’70s, and his extensive career in Washington, including the events of the January 6th siege in 2021. Furthermore, Schumer will address the surge in conspiracy theories targeting Jews, along with the rise in anti-Semitic incidents against synagogues and Jewish individuals.
In a statement, Schumer expressed concerns about the rise of antisemitism and its consequences if not addressed within the historical context. He warned that failing to comprehend the history of antisemitism may lead to violence against Jews and an increase in bigotry within society. Schumer highlighted the fear among Jewish Americans, who never anticipated facing such challenges in the United States but are now apprehensive about the current scenario. He quoted Irish writer Conor Cruise O’Brien, saying, “antisemitism is a light sleeper.”
This upcoming book isn’t Schumer’s first foray into writing; back in 2007, he co-authored “Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class One Family at a Time” with Daniel Squadron.
