Exercise Can Extend Your Life—Some Sports More Than Others
We all know that regular exercise is beneficial for our health, but did you know that some types of sports could add up to 10 years to your life?
Exercise strengthens the immune system, lowers blood pressure, and boosts energy metabolism, contributing to overall health and longevity. However, recent research from Denmark has identified specific sports that offer even greater life-extending benefits.
Study Insights
Danish researchers studied 8,500 healthy adults over a 25-year period, examining their lifestyles and exercise habits. Participants underwent several health checks and reported their regular sports activities. The findings revealed that while any exercise is better than none, certain sports are particularly effective at prolonging life.
Top Sports for Longevity
The study highlights the following sports as particularly effective at extending lifespan:
- Tennis: Adds an average of 9.7 years to life
- Badminton: Adds 6.2 years
- Soccer: Adds 5 years
- Cycling: Adds 3.7 years
- Swimming: Adds 3.4 years
- Jogging: Adds 3.2 years
Why Tennis Tops the List
The study suggests that tennis’s high-intensity, short-burst intervals are especially beneficial for health. Additionally, sports like tennis and badminton tap into our innate sense of play, which can have rejuvenating effects. “Playing badminton, for instance, brings out the childlike joy in us. It’s all about fun,” explains Dr. James O’Keefe, a co-author of the study.
The Importance of Social Interaction
Interestingly, team sports emerged as especially beneficial for longevity. Dr. O’Keefe attributes this to the social interaction involved in team sports. “Our social network is a crucial component for a long and happy life,” he notes. Engaging with others through sports can enhance mental well-being and contribute to a longer, more fulfilling life.
So, if you’re looking to boost your lifespan, consider picking up a racket or joining a team sport. Not only will you enjoy the game, but you might also enjoy a few extra years of life.
