The CrossFit Games were back in action on Friday after a tragic incident where competitor Lazar Dukic passed away in a swimming event in a Texas lake. The CrossFit Games officials expressed their devastation and decided to continue the competition as a way to grieve together rather than shutting down the event entirely.

Lazar Dukic, a 28-year-old athlete from Serbia, was known for his talent and sportsmanship. He ranked third among CrossFit athletes in Serbia and 88th worldwide. Dukic was described as fiercely competitive, joyful, and kind by those who knew him, including being an athlete ambassador for FITAID.

Dukic’s cause of death has not been officially determined by the Tarrant County medical examiner. The incident occurred during a swim following a 3.5-mile run, with witnesses noting a change in swimming patterns among participants.

CrossFit CEO Don Faul emphasized the organization’s dedication to safety, mentioning strict protocols for event management and initiating an investigation into Dukic’s passing. CrossFit, founded over 20 years ago in California, is a global fitness program known for its intense and varied workouts.

The CrossFit Games, held annually since 2007, aim to identify the most physically fit athletes worldwide through a series of challenging events. Participants hail from different countries, with this year’s games anticipated to attract 10,000 attendees in Fort Worth.

The broadcast of the CrossFit Games on ESPN has contributed to its growing popularity by showcasing the athleticism and competitive spirit of participants from around the globe. The competition involves various physical activities like weightlifting, gymnastics, running, swimming, and more, testing athletes in diverse disciplines.
