Debby has been downgraded from a tropical storm but is drenching the Carolinas with rain, posing threats of heavy downpours, flash flooding, and potential tornadoes along the East Coast into the weekend. The mid-Atlantic states, parts of New York, and New England are anticipated to face significant rainfall that could lead to dangerous flooding, particularly near bigger cities along Interstate 95.

Regarding recent incidents, a 78-year-old woman in North Carolina lost her life after a tree fell on her home due to Debby. In another event, Moncks Corner, South Carolina, experienced flash flooding, prompting swift water rescue teams to respond to flooded areas and open an emergency shelter at Berkeley Middle School.

Accuweather’s chief meteorologist warned of possible dangerous flooding and tornadoes during the final chapter of Debby, as parts of North Carolina faced heavy rainfall capable of catastrophic flooding. With the slow movement of the storm, runoff from waterways may lead to lingering flooding issues, especially in mountainous areas triggering flash flooding and dangerous conditions.

The Ogeechee River in Georgia was forecasted to reach major flood stage, prompting evacuation warnings in Effingham County. In North Carolina, additional National Guard troops were activated as Tropical Storm Debby continued to bring heavy rain and destruction to the region.

Although Debby has been downgraded to a tropical depression, it has caused fatalities and significant damage along its path. South Carolina Governor confirmed no deaths or major damage in the state but emphasized concerns regarding potential flooding from upstream rain in North Carolina.

Interstate 95 in North Carolina reopened after temporary closure due to flooding. In Bladen County, North Carolina, falling trees damaged patrol cars while some areas experienced road closures and flash flood emergencies due to standing water and breaches in dams.

The ongoing drama in South Carolina indicates that the state may face additional challenges as Debby’s effects continue. Forecasters predict heavy rainfalls and potential flooding, emphasizing the need for vigilance and preparedness as the storm progresses along the East Coast.
