Key UN official reports to Security Council about increasing influence of Islamic State and its associates in Africa

0

A high-ranking United Nations counterterrorism official addressed the Security Council, expressing concerns that various African regions could come under the influence of the Islamic State group and its associated terrorist factions. Despite authorities in Austria identifying no direct connection between purported plans to target Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna and the militant groups, individuals involved in the scheme seemed to draw inspiration from the Islamic State group and al-Qaida.

Vladimir Voronkov, the undersecretary for counterterrorism, provided an update to the council, highlighting that entities linked to the IS group have broadened and reinforced their operational reach in West Africa and the Sahel region. Voronkov warned that a significant expanse from Mali to northern Nigeria might fall within their sphere of control if their current sway persists.

Moreover, Voronkov noted that IS affiliates have extended their activities to other African areas, such as parts of Mozambique, Somalia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which have witnessed a surge in violent attacks, resulting in significant civilian casualties. The official emphasized that ISIS-K, the IS group’s affiliate in Afghanistan, has bolstered its financial and logistical capabilities over the past half-year, intensifying recruitment endeavors. Voronkov highlighted the global ambitions of IS, as evidenced by the organization claiming responsibility for ISIS-K assaults and ramping up operations in Iraq and Syria.
