Faith leaders and Olympic officials gathered at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Sunday to discuss the relationship between faith and sports. The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, highlighted how faith and sport can complement each other. The 2024 Paris Games faced criticism from various religious groups worldwide, including the Vatican, due to a scene in the opening ceremony that some felt was disrespectful to Christianity. However, the performers and the ceremony’s artistic director denied any connection to Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
To promote peace, Catholic Bishop Emmanuel Gobilliard emphasized the importance of unity during the interfaith meeting inspired by the 1924 Paris Games. Away from the controversy, a tent-like structure at the athletes’ village in Paris has been set up to offer spiritual comfort to over 10,500 athletes and their staff. Representatives from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism have collaborated to provide guidance and support for athletes seeking a respite from the competitive stress.
The shared hall within the athletes’ village offers athletes a tranquil space for prayer and reflection, helping them manage the intense pressure of the games. Each religion was allocated a designated area in compliance with France’s secularism laws, which regulate the role of religion in public spaces. The faith leaders have created a welcoming environment that symbolizes dialogue, tolerance, and inclusivity.
The collaboration between different religious groups within the shared space has fostered a sense of unity and mutual respect. The open door between the Jewish and Muslim spaces serves as a symbolic gesture of camaraderie and friendship. The Hindu area is adorned with traditional sculptures and decorations, while the Christian section features an altar shared by Catholics, Protestants, and Orthodox members.
