The Grand Canyon National Park authorities have confirmed the recovery of the body of a man from North Carolina who tragically fell 400 feet (122 meters) near a scenic viewpoint on the South Rim. The incident occurred at the Pipe Creek Vista, leading to the unfortunate death of 20-year-old Abel Joseph Mejia from Hickory. Mejia’s body was found about a quarter-mile away from the overlook following a report received by park rangers around 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
According to park officials, Mejia’s fall was accidental as he was near the edge of the rim. The National Park Service, in conjunction with the Coconino County medical examiner’s office, is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. In light of this tragic event, park authorities are advising visitors to adhere to safety precautions by staying on designated trails and walkways, maintaining a safe distance of at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) from the edge of the rim, and always remaining behind railings and fences at overlooks.
