North Korea secured their first-ever Olympic diving medal, a silver in the women’s synchronized 10-meter platform event at the Paris Games. China continued its dominance in diving, clinching their 50th Olympic gold in the sport. Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan of China took a significant lead from the beginning of the competition, ultimately scoring 359.10 points. The North Korean team finished in second place with 315.90 points, marking their second medal in Paris.

Jin Mi Jo and Mi Rae Kim of North Korea expressed their desire to aim for the gold in the future, despite falling short in the synchronized event. The duo mentioned that they will strive harder next time to secure the top position. North Korea did not participate in the Tokyo Olympics due to concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix and Lois Toulson of Great Britain claimed the bronze with a score of 304.38.

Chinese divers dominated the competition, further solidifying their stronghold in the sport they have excelled in for decades. Ukrainian divers Kseniia Bailo and Sofiia Lyskun competed with their minds on those affected by the war in their homeland. Bailo dedicated their performance to the soldiers and individuals impacted by the conflict in Ukraine, emphasizing the emotional challenge she faces while competing.

Mexican diver Alejandra Orozco, a four-time Olympian, expressed her admiration for the tough competition, acknowledging China’s prowess in diving. Orozco, who finished fifth, also disclosed her plans to retire after the Olympics. The Mexican flag bearer plans to step down from competitive diving, concluding a successful career that includes winning a silver medal at the 2012 London Games.

Orozco’s partnership with Gabriela Agundez aimed for another Olympic medal, following their bronze win in Tokyo. The pair will continue to compete in the individual platform event. Orozco’s retirement marks the end of an era in Mexican synchronized diving, as she and Agundez have formed a strong and successful partnership over the years. Mexican supporters, such as the Jáuregui brothers, highlighted their pride in the country’s diving achievements and expressed enthusiasm for witnessing their athletes compete on the world stage.
