Hamas stated that Haniyeh was assassinated at his residence in Tehran in an Israeli attack following his presence at the inauguration of Iran’s new president. The Israeli government has not responded to the allegation. This marks the latest in a series of high-profile Hamas figures to be eliminated by Israel since the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and capturing hostages.
Haniyeh was acknowledged for his role in Hamas’ diplomatic affairs and foreign policy, although he was considered less involved in military matters. He was frequently regarded as a more moderate influence within Hamas and praised the October attacks as a setback to Israel’s perceived invulnerability.
