Hamas Leader Ismail Haniyeh Killed in Airstrike at 62, Was on Israel’s Hit List Since October 7

Ismail Haniyeh, the top leader in exile for Hamas, was reportedly killed in a targeted airstrike in Tehran, Iran on Wednesday. Hamas stated that Haniyeh was assassinated at his residence in Tehran in an Israeli attack following his presence at the inauguration of Iran’s new president. The Israeli government has not responded to the allegation. This marks the latest in a series of high-profile Hamas figures to be eliminated by Israel since the October 7 attacks carried out by Hamas, resulting in significant casualties and capturing hostages.

Haniyeh was acknowledged for his role in Hamas’ diplomatic affairs and foreign policy, although he was considered less involved in military matters. He was frequently regarded as a more moderate influence within Hamas and praised the October attacks as a setback to Israel’s perceived invulnerability. Haniyeh’s leadership was emphasized during significant events and public speeches, exemplifying his prominent status within Hamas.

Despite living in exile in Qatar since 2019, Haniyeh continued to play an active role in Hamas’ leadership and engagement throughout the war, participating in negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Haniyeh had faced threats and significant losses within his family due to Israeli military actions, underscoring the personal toll of conflict on Hamas leaders.

Belonging to the founding members of Hamas, Haniyeh climbed the ranks over the years to become the group’s top political leader, succeeding Khaled Mashaal in 2017. His devout religious beliefs and oratory skills were notable characteristics, and he was recognized for his eloquence in speeches to supporters during his tenure as prime minister in Gaza.

Haniyeh’s political journey included periods of imprisonment and exile due to his affiliation with Hamas, encompassing pivotal moments in the Palestinian leadership’s history. He assumed the role of prime minister after Hamas’ victory in legislative elections in 2006 and navigated through tumultuous periods within the Palestinian territories.

The death of Haniyeh in the recent airstrike underscores the ongoing tensions and violence between Hamas and Israel, further complicating efforts towards peace and stability in the region.
