Arizona voters to determine congressional primary candidates and future of metro Phoenix election official

Arizona voters are actively engaged in the primary election on Tuesday, where they are making choices for various congressional candidates. Among the significant races, a pivotal Republican official in Maricopa County is in the spotlight. This official has vehemently opposed election falsehoods within the GOP, facing challenges from fellow Republicans in this election.
Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer, responsible for voter registration and early-voting efforts in the state’s most populous county, is being challenged by state Rep. Justin Heap and IT professional Donald Hiatt. Richer attracted both praise and criticism for debunking false claims about the 2020 and 2022 elections, including criticism from former Phoenix news anchor and current candidate for the U.S. Senate, Kari Lake.
The election also features former U.S. Rep. Trent Franks, Arizona state House Speaker Ben Toma, state Rep. Anthony Kern, among others, vying for nominations in different districts. In the 1st District, where Biden won in 2020, incumbent Republican Rep. David Schweikert faces challenges from several Democrats due to recent ethics violations that have tarnished his reputation.
In the Senate races, there is a notable battle between incumbent Wendy Rogers and Rep. David Cook. Rogers, a staunch supporter of Trump, has faced censure for her controversial views, while Cook aims to focus on local issues like mining and water in the Flagstaff region.
The outcomes of these primary elections will shape the political landscape in Arizona, setting the stage for crucial decisions in the November election. Each candidate faces unique challenges and opportunities as they seek to secure nominations and represent their respective districts in the state legislature and U.S. Congress.
