Mike Trout’s rehab halted by Angels; Anthony Rendon sidelined by back inflammation on IL

The Los Angeles Angels have decided to halt star player Mike Trout’s rehabilitation due to a setback in his recovery from meniscus surgery and have subsequently placed Anthony Rendon on the injured list. Trout underwent surgery on May 3 to address a torn meniscus in his left knee. General manager Perry Minasian announced the decision to pause Trout’s rehab program, citing ongoing discomfort that requires re-evaluation. The extent of Trout’s setback and the duration of his absence remain undisclosed, leaving uncertainty about his return before the end of the current season.

Trout, a three-time MVP, started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake last week but had to exit the game after just two innings due to knee soreness. Despite initial hopes of resuming running activities promptly, Trout experienced a delay in his recovery process. The outfielder had been performing impressively early in the season, boasting 10 home runs and an .867 OPS in his first 29 games. However, injuries have limited Trout’s playing time in recent years, with no more than 119 games played in each of the last five seasons.

Additionally, Rendon has been sidelined once again, this time with lower back inflammation after a previous stint on the injured list due to a hamstring issue. Following his return, the veteran third baseman participated in 14 games before encountering this latest setback. Rendon, known for his solid batting statistics over his career, has struggled to stay on the field for extended periods since joining the Angels on a lucrative contract.

In response to Rendon’s absence, the Angels have called up infielder Michael Stefanic from Triple-A Salt Lake to fill the void on the roster. Despite the setbacks and injuries, the Angels continue to navigate through challenges and make adjustments to their lineup as they strive to compete in the league.
