Xavier Edwards becomes only the second player in Marlins history to hit for the cycle

The Miami Marlins experienced a rare and remarkable moment as Xavier Edwards became only the second player in the team’s history to hit for the cycle. In a game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Edwards batted 4 for 4, including his first career home run, but the Marlins were defeated 6-2. Edwards also scored both of Miami’s runs during the game, showcasing a strong performance.

The Marlins, established in 1993, had never seen a player hit for the cycle until Luis Arráez achieved the milestone earlier in the season. Edwards expressed his excitement and gratitude for following in Arráez’s footsteps and becoming the second player in Marlins history to hit for the cycle.

Throughout the game, Edwards displayed his hitting prowess by homering off Tobias Myers on the opening pitch, drawing a walk, hitting a double, and completing the cycle with a triple in the seventh inning. This exceptional performance was even more impressive considering it was his first career homer and triple.

Despite being aware of the milestone as he approached his final at-bat, facing tough competition in the Brewers’ pitcher Devin Williams, Edwards managed to hit a single to complete the cycle. This achievement placed him among a select group of players in MLB history who hit for the cycle in the same game they hit their first career homer.

Edwards, who missed the beginning of the season due to a foot infection, has been on a hot streak lately with a batting average of .379 and an on-base percentage of .462 in 25 games. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker praised Edwards for his calm and powerful at-bats, highlighting his ability to perform well under pressure situations.

Despite his previous lack of power hitting, with only 10 extra-base hits in his career, Edwards’s remarkable cycle achievement solidified his place in Marlins history. He plans to keep souvenir baseballs from his first homer and cycle, intending to give them to his mother as mementos of this significant milestone.
