Pilates and stretching routines are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. The blend of intense muscle training and dynamic stretching is attracting a younger demographic to fitness clubs. How can fitness centers take advantage of this growing trend?

According to LesMills, the rise of Pilates and stretching workouts is largely fueled by Gen Z, individuals born between 1997 and 2012, who are poised to make up 30% of the world’s population. This generation values connections, authenticity, and personalized experiences, seeking out joyful and uplifting activities where they can be fully engaged. Their approach to consuming content and communication is shifting norms.

For Gen Z, fitness is a key focus. They see gyms as essential spots for socializing, choosing them over bars for social interactions and even romantic outings. What types of activities do they prefer at the gym?

Despite the hype surrounding Gen Z’s interest in weightlifting (81% use free weights), their fitness preferences are varied. A survey titled Gen Z Fitness: Deciphering the Trend shows that 64% of Gen Z individuals prefer diverse workout options and enjoy exploring new exercise routines.

Gen Z’s passion for strength and conditioning has contributed to the surge in popularity of sculpt workouts such as Stretch, Yoga, and Pilates classes, which complement muscle toning and building. These workouts offer intense results through low-impact movements.

Sculpt classes have emerged as the fastest-growing segment in the fitness industry in 2022, with a 471% increase in class bookings between January and October. The Gen Z Fitness: Deciphering the Trend report highlights a significant interest in this category, with 63% of Gen Z participants enjoying Reformer Pilates, 57% taking part in Yoga classes, and 55% engaging in mat Pilates sessions.

This trend is also reflected on social media platforms, with Pilates videos on TikTok garnering 4.1 billion views and Yoga videos amassing a staggering 34.4 billion views.

To cater to the demand for sculpt workouts among Gen Z, LES MILLS has introduced LES MILLS SHAPES™. Inspired by Pilates and Power Yoga, this program focuses on strengthening and sculpting muscles through precise, controlled movements set to an energetic electronic playlist. It’s an engaging and challenging workout suitable for all fitness levels, improving posture and flexibility.

Building on the success of LES MILLS Strength Development, LES MILLS SHAPES aims to attract a new wave of members with innovative and exciting fitness experiences. The program consists of six 45-minute workouts, offering fitness clubs fresh content to rejuvenate their class schedules and entice new participants, while also providing loyal members with a new experience.

Erin Maw, the Program Director, explains: “I developed LES MILLS SHAPES in response to the growing demand for contemporary Pilates offerings within the Les Mills community. Pilates and Barre’s workouts are gaining popularity worldwide, especially among the younger crowd.”

Recognizing the significance of options for the younger crowd, we have created a unique program that combines elements of Pilates, Yoga, and stretching exercises. LES MILLS SHAPES is suitable for all skill levels, empowering individuals to discover their perfect balance and push their limits.

Studies conducted in our facilities in New Zealand reveal a strong appeal to Gen Z members, with 92% endorsing the class. Instructors have also shown enthusiasm, as 94% intend to keep teaching Shapes due to its innovation and challenging nature. This program is truly revolutionizing the fitness game.
