An internet outage impacting Microsoft has caused disruptions in various sectors worldwide, including flights, banks, media outlets, and companies. The issue affecting access to Microsoft 365 apps and services persisted for hours despite the company announcing that it was gradually resolving the problem.
Airlines in the U.S., Europe, Australia, and India reported problems, leading to some flights being grounded. Retail stores, banks, railway companies, and hospitals in different regions were also affected, creating what seemed to be an unprecedented internet disruption.
Around the globe, airlines experienced disruptions causing delays in check-in systems and flight schedules. Despite the Paris Olympics approaching, the Paris airport authority stated that its computer systems were not impacted by the outage. However, multiple airlines and airports elsewhere faced challenges.
In the U.S., airlines like United, American, Delta, and Allegiant experienced grounding. Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport had to resort to manual check-ins due to system outages. Similarly, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport in Germany faced check-in issues, resulting in canceled flights. Amsterdam, Zurich, and Rome also reported problems.
Baltic Hub in Gdansk, Poland, a significant container hub, temporarily closed its entry gates and suspended operations due to the global outage. Meanwhile, Britain’s Sky News resumed broadcasting after being offline in the morning, relying on printed notes initially. Borsa Italiana restored the correct disclosure of the Milan stock exchange index.
Israel’s Cyber Directorate attributed the outage to the cybersecurity platform Crowdstrike, impacting posts offices and hospitals. Crowdstrike acknowledged the issues on Microsoft ports related to their Falcon sensor product and advised monitoring the customer support portal for updates.
