Major League Baseball’s Batting Average Reaches Near 50-Year Low While Pitching Velocity Reaches Record High

In Arlington, Texas, baseball is currently facing an era with low-scoring games and high pitching velocity. Minnesota Twins manager Rocco Baldelli emphasized the increasing difficulty of scoring runs due to pitchers constantly improving. As of July, the major league batting average sits at .250, a slight increase from earlier in the year, but still marking one of the lowest averages since the end of the dead-ball era in 1920.

Commissioner Rob Manfred acknowledged the decrease in batting average, expressing concern about the lack of action in games. This trend is not exclusive to the major leagues, as minor league batting averages have also dipped from .256 in 2019 to .243 this year. The shift towards faster pitches is evident, with the average four-seam fastball velocity reaching 94.2 mph, a significant increase from past years.

To combat the declining offensive numbers, Major League Baseball has implemented defensive shift limitations and pitch clocks to accelerate game pace. Despite a reduction in game length, with the average now at 2 hours and 36 minutes, runs per team remain low at 4.39. However, there has been a slight decrease in strikeout rates this season.

The prevalence of advanced analytics and data in baseball has led to a more technical approach in pitching and hitting strategies. Teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers have established departments focused on baseball systems and performance innovation to provide players with detailed insights. Pitchers are now equipped with comprehensive information on what pitches to throw and when to throw them, while batters analyze opposing pitchers’ tendencies to improve their hitting approach.

Pitchers like Max Fried of the Atlanta Braves have expanded their pitch arsenals to keep batters guessing, emphasizing the importance of mixing speeds and changing looks. The advent of pitching labs and training facilities, such as the “Gas Station” at the New York Yankees’ complex, has revolutionized player development across all levels of the sport. The evolution of pitch design and the emphasis on adaptability have reshaped the dynamic of major league clubhouses, encouraging continuous adjustments and innovation in the game of baseball.
