Nepal’s newly appointed prime minister, Khadga Prasad Oli, was sworn into office on Monday in Kathmandu. Oli, the leader of Nepal’s largest communist party, is serving as prime minister for the fourth time after a previous coalition government collapsed.
At the ceremony, two deputy prime ministers and 19 ministers appointed by Oli also took the oath of office. It is expected that Oli will further expand the Cabinet to include members from coalition partner parties.
Oli, aged 72, will be heading a coalition government consisting of his Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) and the Nepali Congress party, which are the two largest parties in Nepal.
The government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal fell apart last Friday after Oli’s party withdrew its support and entered into a new partnership. Oli will need to seek a vote of confidence in parliament within a month to continue in office, but the new alliance formed by the two parties has more than half the necessary members to prove their majority.
