Sophia Smith scored a goal in the 64th minute, leading the United States to a 1-0 victory over Mexico in a rematch on Saturday. The friendly match at Red Bull Arena served as a revenge opportunity for the Americans following their earlier loss to Mexico at the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup in February.
The game was the first of two tune-up matches for the United States as they prepare for the 2024 Olympics. Next, they will face Costa Rica at Audi Field in Washington before heading to France.
Despite having promising chances in the first half, the United States couldn’t find the back of the net until Smith’s goal in the second half, assisted by Mallory Swanson. This victory marks the third consecutive match in which the U.S. team, under new coach Emma Hayes, has not conceded a goal.
The match also honored the 25th anniversary of the “The 99ers,” the team that famously won the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Additionally, Alyssa Naeher, the U.S. captain, was recognized for her 100th appearance with the national team before the game.
Changes to the U.S. Olympic roster were announced with forward Catarina Macario unable to play in France due to knee issues. Lynn Williams and Croix Bethune also made appearances during the match against Mexico.
