Greta Gerwig, a highly respected filmmaker and director behind the
blockbuster hit “Barbie,” has been chosen as TIME Magazine’s
Woman of the Year for 2024

Gerwig, who played a role in both writing and directing the movie, has
reached a significant milestone with “Barbie,” earning a staggering
$1.4 billion at the box office

This extraordinary achievement sets a new record for the highest grossing film ever directed by a female, cementing Gerwig’s place in the annals of cinema history and showcasing her substantial influence on the film industry.

The 40-year-old filmmaker stands out as the first individual to have
her initial three independent feature films—Lady Bird, Little Women,
and Barbie—each vying for “Best Picture” at the Academy Awards,
as noted by TIME. Many eagerly anticipate any plans she may have
for a sequel to “Barbie.”

However, she shared with the magazine her feelings about the
process of writing movie scripts. “At times, as a writer and director, I
come up with ideas that make me pause and wonder, ‘How will I even
pull that off?’ And that feeling is truly invigorating.

In her interview, the renowned director revealed that while working on
a film, she seeks to uncover an “undertow.” In the case of “Barbie,”
the undertow was the multigenerational conflict surrounding the
iconic doll. “I recall visiting Toys R Us and admiring the Barbies,
fascinated by their hair and every detail. While my mom had
hesitations, I saw a story there”.

With her fresh narrative style and exceptional directorial skills, Gerwig
has not only enraptured global audiences but has also paved the path
for increased visibility and prospects for women in the realm of
filmmaking.
